With less than two weeks left in the year, I hope you have been able to achieve your goals this year, and have started the process for 2012.
You Can Achieve Your Goals
Having read that 70% of people who make New Year’s resolutions abandon them within 30 days, I recall an education catalog with the picture of a brain, with companion copy that read, “If you would simply brush your teeth with your non-dominant hand for two weeks, you can increase your willpower.”
May sound a little odd, but sometimes that’s the very kind of out-of-the-box thinking that makes us move off dead center and create a new reality. Or, to put it another way, if we keep doing what we’ve been doing, we’ll keep getting what we’ve been getting.
“Willpower Tip To Help You Achieve Your Goals”
If you know someone who was disappointed in their results for 2011, share the tooth brushing switch with a Happy New Year note that offers, “A novel tip to help you with the willpower necessary to achieve your goals.”
Maybe it’s just a humorous note to yourself to help you stay on track for a few more days and in 2012. Seriously, though, sometimes we have to try new things to get different results.
Achieve Your Goals With a Set-up For Success, Not Failure
Stop to consider which habits are not working, and replace them with behaviors that produce the results you want, consistently.
- Practice positive self-talk, re-framing mistakes as “high-growth learning opportunities.”
- Create SMART Goals, which are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound.
- Consider working with a coach or accountability partner who will help you stay on track to achieve your goals.
Over the next 12 days, plan to spend uninterrupted time thinking about what you want in 2012, and how you will reward yourself for goal attainment along the way.
Armed with the clear intention and commitment to the high value activities you are willing to do daily in order the achieve your goals, you have a few days left in 2011, with a strong foundation to begin your best year yet, 2012.
